Pre War

George Phillips was born in 1891 in Bishop's Stortford to Jesse and Charlotte Phillips and baptised on 7 October 1895 at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Wharf Road Cottages, Bishop's Stortford, where his father was a bricklayer. They remained in Bishop's Stortford on the 1911 Census,  living at 20 Wharf Road and George was  employed as a Butcher (Journeyman).

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Ealing and initially service in the Royal Fusiliers under reg. no. 26317, later transferring to the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). He was killed in action on 28 March during the Battle of Arras when the Germans launched a great attack (Operation Mars) north of the Somme River from Puisieux to the north-east of Arras. His body was never recovered or not identified and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. 

Additional Information

His mother Charlotte received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £18 16s 8d. His father Jesse died in 1926.
