Pre War

Arthur Francis Philbey was born in Tring in 1895 to Joseph Philbey, blacksmith, and Clara (nee Barlow).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Minnie (born 1890), Ernest (born 1892) and  Arthur were living at 45, Wingrave Road, Tring.


On the 1911 Census the family had moved to 11, Queens Road, Finchley, London. His father was a steam roller driver, Ernest was an assistant caretaker, Arthur was working for a coachbuilder. Also recorded were Hilda (born 1904), Herbert (born 1906) and Alfred (born 1907).

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted in Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry as Private 14834, as no Service Record was found it is assumed that this in aurumn 1914.


He was transferred in Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment as Private 17620 in the 6th (Service) Battalion and went to France on 19 Jul 1915 as part of 58 Brigade, 19 (Western) Division,  they took part in a minor action at Pietre, a supporting/diversionary action during the Battle of Loos  . Arthur was promoted to Corporal at some time, He was wounded and died from his wounds on 7 Apr 1916.
