Stanstead Abbotts Village Memorial

Pre War

Born in 1888 one of 6 children and in the 1911 census lived with his widowed mother Annie in Chapel Lane, Stanstead Abbotts together with brother Herbert and sister Ruth. After 1911 Charles married his wife Kate. He worked as a grocer’s assistant.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Bedford on 30/05/1916, posted to Northamptonshire Regiment, fought in the 1st Battle of the Somme at Montauban and Guillemont. Unit moved to Belgium and fought in 3rd Battle of Ypres. Moved back to France near Loos, then on to Pozieres. His unit came under heavy attack at the start of Operation Michael on 21/03/1918 at 04.40 am and his unit was almost overrun as they fought a rearguard action and this is when Charles was killed.
