James Edward Ayres was born in 1873 in Wendover, Bucks., to William Ayres, inn waiter,, and Henrietta (nee Villis).
On the 1871 Census William, a costermonger, with Henrietta, Mary Elizabeth (born1861), Sarah Ann (born 1862) and Elizabeth (born 1864) were living at Cold Harbour, Wendover.
On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Mary E, Sarah A. Lucy Jane (born 1870), William J (born 1871) were living at Cold Harbour, Wendover.
On the 1891 Census the family of parents (William was now a publican), Mary E, Sarah, Henrietta, Lucy Jane, William J, James (assistant to father) and Emily Jane (born 1877) and 4 employees were living at the Rising Sun, Tring Road, Wendover.
James Married Minnie Kate Deering in Aug 1896.
On the 1901 Census the family of James, a sewing Machine agent, Minnie and daughter Dorothy May (born 1901).
James‘ mother, Henrietta died in 1906.
On 1911 Census James, a furniture dealer, Minnie and daughter Dorothy May were living at 26, Akeman Street, Tring.
Wartime Service
James was deemed to have been enlisted on 18 Apr 1918 and was called forward for service on 3 Oct 1918 as Private T/440813 and was designated as Driver at 3 Reserve MT Depot, Woolwich on 4 Oct 1918 . James was taken ill and admitted to Brook War Hospital, Woolwich where he died from Influenza on 23 Oct 1918.
Additional Information
War Gratuity was inadmissable, arrears of £2 18s 3d was paid to his widow Minnie. James was also ineligible for any Medals as he designated for Home Service in the UK.
