Pre War

Born in 1890, son of Alfred and Catherine Austin of Hitchin Lane, Weston. Baptised in Holy Trinity Church, Weston on 5 October 1890. 1911 Census: Working on a farm as a waggoner in Bracken Hill, Sherriff Hutton, Yorks.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in January 1915 in Duffield, Yorkshire and gave his residence as Middleton on the Wold. Went to France the following July. Died of wounds following action at Estaires near Lille, France.

Additional Information

Initially enlisted in Yorkshire Regiment, No. 2773. Alfred Ernest was Alfred and Catherine's second son lost in the war, his brother Ronald Frederick having died on 17 June 1915. A third son, Lance Corporal Major Austin was with a Trench Mortar Battalion in France.
