Joseph
was born in Harston, Cambridgeshire in 1889 to James and Sophia Auger. On the 1911 Census, he was living at Hill
Hall Gardens, Theydon Mount, Epping , Essex and working as a Domestic Gardener.
He was sharing the house with two other gardeners. He married Ellen Gertrude
Knights on 7 November 1914 in Lambeth. Their son Joseph Victor was born on 23
May 1915 in St Marylebone, London. They later moved to 26 Lamont Road, Chelsea,
London.
Wartime Service
Joseph enlisted
in Westminster on 10 September 1914 and went to Winchester on 12 September. He was sent
to the front on 29 July 1915 and saw action in the Battle of Loos in September
1915. He wounded in action by a shell on 18 December 1915 and died of the
wounds the following day.
Additional Information
His widow, Ellen Gertrude was awarded a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £5 7s 1d. She also received a pension of 15 shillings a week for herself and her child.
Brother to Frank Auger and Victor Auger also named on the Bishop's Stortford Memorial.
