Pre War

George Edward Peters was born on 5 December 1895 in Baldock, Herts. the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Peters and was baptised in Baldock on 19 January 1896. He was one of then children, although two died in infancy.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Pond Lane, Baldock, where his father was working as a gardener, domestic. They remained in Pond Lane and were living there in 1911, at which time George was working with his father as a market gardener.


His parents later lived at "Harefield", Pembroke Road, Baldock, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 1st Battalion in France from 27 July 1915. At some point he was promoted to Corporal, then to Sergeant. 


George was killed in action, aged 21,  during the attack on La Coulette, (part of the Battle of Arras). Although some military records indicate that George died of wounds, he was officially recorded as missing with death being presumed on or since 23 April 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £13 and pay owing of £1 7s 8d. Pension cards exist with his mother as dependant but give no indication of the amount of any pension paid.
