Thomas Atterbury was born in Cogenhoe (baptised 15 Nov 1892) to Thomas Atterbury, farm labourer, and Emily Jane (nee Law).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Louise, (born 1883), Edith )born 1885), Frederick J (born 1886), Flora (born 1888) and Arthur Edward (born 1890) were living at the Lodge, Cogenhoe.
His mother Emily Jane died in 1892
On the 1901 Census the family of father, Edith, Fred, Arthur Edward born 1890 and Thomas were living at Main Street, Whiston, Hardingstone, Northants.
Thomas enlisted on 28 Jan 1908 as Private 8278 in the Northamptonshire Regiment, he was promptly sent on a special training course until 25 May 1908. Thomas was posted to 2nd Battalion and served in Malta and Egypt.
On the 1911 Census Thomas, soldier, was recorded at Cogenhoe, together with his widowed father, Fred J, and Florence.
Wartime Service
On the outbreak of the Great War The 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment were serving at Alexandria in Egypt returning to UK in Oct 1914, The Battalion were landed in France on 5/6th Nov 1914 as part of 24 Brigade 8 Division. The Battalion were involved in the Battles od Neuve Chapelle and Aubers in 1915.
Thomas was posted to 1st Battalion in the Regiment on 18 June 1915 and took part in the Battle of Loos (Sep-Oct 1915). He was promoted to Corporal on 12 Feb 1916.
Thomas was wounded in both legs on 27 Jun 1916 and was evacuated to 1 Field Ambulance and 33 Casualty Clearing Station for treatment but he died of his wounds on 28 Jun 1916.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £11 10s and arrears of £6 11s 4d was paid to Miss Annie Gibbs. Brother Arthur Edward served with 1st/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt) as Cpl 807, died of GSW to head 17 Jun 1915. His father, Thomas Atterbury ordered his headstone inscription while living at Mill Lane, Cogenhoe, Northampton, it Reads: "THOSE THAT IN LIFE LOVED YOU DEARLY LOVE YOU IN DEATH JUST THE SAME".
There is no obvious connection to Potters Bar but it may be through some relative.
