Arthur James Atterbury was born in Little Heath on 5 Dec 1898. (baptised at Christ Church 19 Mar 1899) to George Atterbury, bricklayers labourer, and Ellen Maria  (nee Pearce).


On the 1911 Census he was a schoolboy and living with his parents, Winifred (born 1900), Herbert (born 1901), Frederick (born 1902), Dora (born 1905) and Elsie (born 1908) at Frampton Road, Little Heath.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for Arthur. It is known that he enlisted at Barnet as a Territorial Soldier in Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment as Private 5071.


He was renumbered as 293653 in the Territorial Force renumbering in 1917. He was posted to 2nd /10th Battalion of the Regiment in Palestine following their participation as part of 53 (Welsh) Division in the Gallipoli Campaign. He was killed in action during the Second Battle of Gaza 17-19 Apr 1917), in the Palestine Campaign against the Turks
