Edward Perry was born on 17 May 1883 in Bishop's Stortford to Edward Perry, a well sinker, and Louisa (nee Trundle), and was baptised on 25 Jul 1883 in Hockerill, Herts. 


On the 1891Census the family of parents, Ellen (born 1882), Edward and Alfred (born 1887) were living at 6 Bramblefields, Bishop Stortford.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Edward (a wellsinker’s labourer), Alfred (coachbuilder’s boy), Bertie (born 1882), Albert (born 1884), Arthur (born 1886), Gertrude (born 1888) and Beatrice May (born 1900) were living at 1 Bramblefields, Bishops Stortford.


Edward married Mabel Shorter in 1904 in Bishop's Stortford and on the 1911 Census Edward was living with his wife Mabel and children Edward (born 1905) and Lilian (born 1908) at 16 Stansted Road, Bramble Field, Bishop's Stortford and working as a wellsinker’s labourer. They later had two more children, Violet Maud (born 1911) and Arthur Stanley (born 1914).

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for Edward. He enlisted as a Territorial Soldier some time about Dec 1915/Feb 1916 in Shoreditch, Middlesex as Private 3605 in 1/4 Battalion, Essex Regiment, (serial 3424 issued 15 Nov 1915 and 3666 issued 12 Feb 1916). He became 201194 during the Territorial renumbering in 1917. Edward went to Egypt joining the 1/4 Battalion as part of 54 (East Anglian) Division, both were Territorial formations, and taking part in the First Battle of Gaza in Palestine (26-27 Mar 1917). Edward was killed in action on 26 Mar 1917 during this Battle.


He also is listed as being formerly in the Bedfordshire Regiment service no. 22032 (not confirmed).

Additional Information

His widow received a War Gratuity of £8 and arrears of £1 15s 10d for herself and her children. She also received a pension of £1 8s 9d a week from 15 October 1917.


Brother to Alfred Perry who died 24 December 1914 and Albert Sidney Perry who died 2 July 1916, both of whom are named on the Bishop's Stortford Town  and Hockerill Memorials.
