Pre War

Charles Alfred Perry (known as Charlie) was born in 1896 in Tewin, Herts, the son of James and Hannah Perry, and baptised there on 13 December 1896.  He was one of 12 children, although two had died by 1911.

The family were living at Lower Green, Tewin on the 1901 Census and his father was working as a Woodman. Although his parents were away visiting their married daughter Annie Anderson in Dulwich on Census night in 1911, Charlie, his brothers Arthur and Harry and sister Emily were at home in Lower Green, Tewin. Charlie was then working as Grocer's Apprentice.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted in Hertford and initially served with the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 3090, later transferring to the Royal Sussex Regiment.

He was killed in action at St Quentin on 21 March 1918, aged 21. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £19 10s and pay owing of £9 18s 3d.

Brother to Harry and Walter Perry both named on the Tewin Memorials. The three brothers who died are also commemorated on the family headstone in Tewin (St. Peter) Churchyard - Harry is the only one of the three buried here. Their inscription reads:
