Albert Taylor was born in Egham, Surrey in about 1895. His mother, born Elizabeth Timms, was living in Batchworth Hill in 1881. Albert’s grandparents, John and Mary Timms were living at 4 Uxbridge Terrace in 1901 and 1911. Elizabeth Timms married John Samuel Searle in 1905 in Epping, Essex and was living in Egham in 1911. It has not been possible to find how he was known as Albert Taylor.

Wartime Service

Albert Taylor attested on 2/9/1914, aged 19 years. (also stated 19 years 11 months) He was described as being 5 foot 6 inches tall, weighing 120lb, with blue eyes and fair hair and working as a grocer’s assistant. His mother was Mrs Elizabeth Searle of 36 Rusham Road, Egham Surrey and his aunt,  Mrs Edith Wilson of 45 Uxbridge Road, Rickmansworth. He had no brothers or sisters and his father was not alive. He joined the expeditionary forces to France on 29/7/1915. The War diaries for the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade for 22/9/1915 state that there was a thick mist that day. Enemy mortars were fired and they retaliated. Machine guns were fired and the enemy retaliated. The action continued until midnight. Albert Taylor was killed in action that day

Additional Information

His soldier’s effects and War gratuity, totalling £6 18s 5d, were left to his aunt, Mrs Edith Wilson (formerly Edith Timms, his mother’s younger sister. She also applied for his medals.
