Pre War

Jeffery Ashwell was born on 21 July 1883 in Bishop's Stortford to Jeffery and Julia Ashwell.  On the 1891 Census the family were living at Stortford Park Farm, where his father was a farmer. He left for New Zealand in September 1900 on the Paparoa, aged 17 and gave his occupation as farmer.


Wartime Service

He was a labourer employed by Schultze Bros of Makirikiri living at 149 Willis Street, Wellington when he enlisted, initially under the assumed named of William John Brown as he was living with a Mr H Brown. He left New Zealand on 29 July 1916 and arrived in France on 29 September 1916. He served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and died of wounds received whilst on active service at No. 1 N.Z. Field Ambulance.
