Pre War

William was born in Sawbridgeworth, in 1888. William’s family moved first to Shropshire, before returning to live at Excelsior Road in Kingston Upon Thames.


William became a professional soldier, enlisting into the 2nd Battalion East Surrey Regiment at Kingston Upon Thames in 1907.

Wartime Service

At the beginning of the war, this unit was stationed in India at Chaubattia. They finally arrived at Le Havre in France on 19 January 1915.

William’s date of death is 23 April 1915. This was the second day of the Second Battle of Ypres, in which William’s battalion participated. He was killed in action and has no known grave and so is named Menin Gate. He was aged 26.
