Pre War

Henry's mother was Frances Perkins of 46 Shakespeare Road, Watford, previously of 52 Sandringham Road, Watford.

When he enlisted in Casula, New South Wales, Australia on 3rd February 1916 he was working as a labourer, 23 years and 9 month, 5’ 8” tall and a healthy 150 ponds.

Wartime Service

He enlisted into the 18th Battalion "A" Company. As a private he was in Australia from 3rd February 1916. He embarked from Sydney on the Ascanius on 25th October and after a number of transfers and training left for France 25th April 1917, arriving 15th May.

From France he was given a month's leave to England on 16th February 1918. When he returned, he was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 22nd June. Soon afterwards, on the 6th of July he was wounded in the chest from the back 6th July 1918 - the bullet passing through his body. Initially he has some paralyse After initial treatment for his gunshot wound, he was transferred to England, arriving at Fulham Hospital in Hammersmith, on the 20th July. He was treated until 3rd September and discharged and able to walk but permanently disabled, to return to Australia 6th September 1918 where he subsequently died on the 12th of December.

Additional Information

In his will he left everything to his mother.

His brother Charles died 9 July 1916 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.
