Pre War

William Frederick Diss was born on 14 July 1892 in Bishop's Stortford to Frederick and Mary Ann (Annie)  Diss, and baptised on 29 August 1892 at St Michaels, Bishop's Stortford. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Princess Court, Albert Street, Bishop's Stortford, where his father was a hawker, (his given name was 'Willie'). He married Gladys Irene Freeman in Rochford, Essex in 1910.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Stratford, Essex and served in the Royal Horse Artillery, He was killed in action on 29 September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 15s 10d and a pension of 33s 4d a week from 16 September 1918.
