Pre War

John Griffith Asher was born on 31 May 1896, the son of John and Kezia Asher (nee Griffiths) and baptised at the Islington Presbyterian Church on 5 July 1896 at which time  the family were living at 98 High Street, Islington. They were at the same address on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, when his father was working as a Hosier. 


He attended Hugh Myddleton School, Islington, from 4 September 1905 and worked for G B Kent & Sons, brush manufacturers of Apsley, Herts on enlistment. 


His parents later lived at 14, Cloudesley St., Barnsbury, London. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London and initially served under reg. no. 4128 with the 14th Battalion of the London Regiment (London Scottish).


He was killed in action on 25 September 1917, aged 21, and is buried in Lagnicourt Hedge Cemetery, France. 


Additional Information

His mother, Mrs K Asher, 14 Cloudesley Street, Barnsbury, London, N2, ordered his headstone inscription: "BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH". His sister Margaret received a war gratuity of £13 and pay owing of £4 7s 6d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week from 9 April 1918.
