Albert William was born in 1897 in Whitwell, St Pauls Walden to John Asbury, (farm labourer) and Annie (nee Chamberlain).On the 1891 Census John & Annie with child Ann M (born 1890) were living with the Chambelains, James & Esther at Tankards, Offley, Hitchin.


On the 1901 census the family of parents, Annie M (born 1890), Arthur John (born 1892), Albert, and Leonard Alfred (born 1901) were living in Whitwell. 


On the 1911 Census the family now consisting of parents, Arthur (a cowman on farm), Albert and Leonard were living in Whitwell. 

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Albert. Albert was enlisted (some time in 1916) as Private 35586 in the Essex Regiment. Following his training (probably with 3rd (Reserve) Battalion) He was posted to 11th (Service) Battalion of the Regiment which had been in France since 11 Oct 1915, in 18 Brigade of 6th Division.


He may have taken part in later Battles of the Somme such as Morval and Le Transloy. He was wounded and died on 22 Jun 1917 probably as a result of enemy shellfire etc. 

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 9s 1d was paid to his mother.
