Pre War

Arthur born on 21st October 1897 and was the son of Albert Robert and Bertha Emily Pegram, later of Batterdale, Hatfield, Herts. Christened on the 14th August 1898 at Essendon, Hertfordshire.


In the 1901 Census Arthur, aged 3, was living with his parents and siblings, in Batterdale, Hatfield.  His father was a joiner (estate) carpenter and that was still the case in 1911.


Officially recorded as born in Hatfield when he enlisted there.

Wartime Service

He was formerly M/225260. R.A.S.C. but became Rifleman 42174, 10th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles Regiment. 


The Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of February 1917, in the 29th list of men mobilised from Hatfield, recorded “Pegram, Arthur – Batterdale – Rifle Battalion.” and then in September 1917: “Arthur Pegram – Kings Irish Rifles.”


Awarded the Victory Meal and British War Medal.

Additional Information

Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger: Mrs Pegram (Mother) of Batterdale, Hatfield received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”.
