Charles Herbert was in born on 24 Mar 1890 to Frank Pascoe Peet, blacksmith, plumber and Mary A (nee Lamb). The family were living at 12 Cockfosters Road, Enfield and Charles was the youngest of 3 brothers (Maurice, David and Charles) and 1 sister. Their father died in 1894.
On the 1901 Census Charles was still living at home with his mother, sister, Elsie and younger brother Hugh (born 1892). On the 1911 Census Charles was printer’s clerk.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted as Private 6130 in the London Regiment and was posted to1/9th (County of London) Battalion (Queen Victoria’s Rifles) as Rifleman 392558.
He went to France on 8 Feb 1917. His Division (56th London) were engaged in the 1st Battle of the Scarpe (9th Apr – 14th Apr 1917) capturing the heavily defended fortified village of Neuville-Vitasse and the attacks on Monch-le-Prieux. Charles was killed inaction on 14 Apr 1917.
His remains were not recovered and Charles is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of 3 and arrears of £2 12s 8d paid to his mother. Brother David may also have served in the same battalion as Rifleman 309428 surviving to die in Australia in 1942.
