Stanley Arnold was born in early 1899, son of Thomas Arnold and Annie (nee Munsey) of Coltsfoot, Datchworth (shown as Patchworth in army records). His father was a labourer and ploughman.

In 1911 the family are at Bridgefoot Cottages, and Stanley has two brothers and sisters, and his father is described as a horseman.

He lived in Datchworth, and probably joined up with John Bennett as they were the same age, and served in the same regiments until death parted them.

He enlisted at Hitchin into the 51 Graduated Battalion Queens Royal (West Surreys) Regt. as Private 157181, for his initial Training after which some of compatriots he transferred to the 7 Battalion Lincolnshire Regt. as Private 42804.

The 7th Lincs. were in 17 (Northern) Division and took part in the Somme battles of 1918 and the Offensives around St Quentin.
