Pre War
Albert was born in Tylers Causeway, Newgate Street, Herts, in 1883, son of John Arnold (B 1828 in Hatfield) and Elizabeth Arnold (B 1842). One of 15 Children.
1891 Census records Albert aged 8 at school, living with his parents, 3 brothers and sister Emily, in Tylers Causeway, Newgate Street, Herts. Alberts mother Elizabeth died in 1899. His father was working as an agricultural labourer.
1901 Census records Albert living with his widowed father, 2 brothers and sister Emily in Tylers Causeway, Newgate Street. He was employed as a Hay Carter. 1911 he was still living in Tylers Causeway with his widowed father and 2 brothers and working as a Farm Labourer. Albert was a hay carter, his father, aged 73, is listed as living on own means.
In the 1911 Census, Albert, age 28, was still living at Tyler’ Causeway. Albert and his Father (82) are listed as labourers.
Officially recorded as born in Tyler’s Causeway and was living there when he enlisted in Bedford.
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted in Bedford, Beds. Posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the Service No. 27892.
It is not known, when or where Albert received his injuries, he died of then on 2nd December 1916, in No. 3 Western General Hospital, Cardiff. He is buried in Newport (St Woolos) Cemetery, Monmouthshire.
Awarded Victory Medal and British War Medal.
Additional Information
His effects of Pay owing and War Gratuity where split between two of his brothers and four sisters.
There is a difference of date of death with Hatfield Memorial Album entry 29/4/1916 and the CWGC entry 02/12/1916. The Memorial album list Albert as being in the Bedfordshire Regt. and dying at Newport which corresponds to the CWGC entry.
