Pre War
Richard Henry Pedder was born on 6 January 1896 in Woolmer Green, the son of George Charles Pedder and Rosetta (nee Brand) of Woolmer Green, Welwyn, Herts and baptised on 15 March 1896 in Welwyn.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Woolmer Green where his father was a farmer. His mother died in 1906 and on the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed father and siblings, along with housekeeper Emma Bonfield at Woolmer Green Farm and was working on the farm with his father.
He is said to have lived in Kensington at the time of enlistment.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Chelmsford, Essex and served with the 5th Battalion, London Regiment, initially under reg. no. 3910, later changed to 302371.
He died of wounds received in action on 10 May 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His father, G. C. Pedder,, 34, Kings Road, Hitchin, Herts, ordered his headstone inscription: “GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN”. A war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £3 6s 9d was awarded to his sister Evelyn May.
