Pre War

John Arnold Archibald was born on 25 June 1890 in Ulmarra, New South Wales, the son of William and Clara Archibald. 


He was educated at Scotch College, Perth, Western Australia and his occupation was a school teacher. His next of kin was given as Osmund A Archibald [brother], Railway Hotel, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 17 or 24 August 1914 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement. 


His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on board HMAT A28 Militiades on 7 August 1916. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 21 November 1916. He was recommended for the Military Cross in 1917 and the Croix de Guerre in August 1918 for his work at Mont de Merris, Lihon Ridge, Cappy and Mentin Road.


He was also Mentioned in Despatches for his work at Strazeele, Lihons and Chuignolles. He died of wounds on 24 September 1918, aged 28.

Additional Information

Mrs A Jackson, 2 Blenheim Street, Randwick, New South Wales, Australia, ordered his headstone inscription: "BETTER TO DIE IN THE FLOWER OF YOUTH.... PALMA NON SINE PULVERE".
