Pre War

Cecil Arnold was born in 1889 in Codicote, Herts, the son of Charles Alfred and Emma Arnold and one of ten children, although two had died by 1911. 


On the 1891 Census the family were living in New Town, Codicote where his father was working as a Game Keeper. They had moved to Heath Lane, Codicote by 1901,  his father was then a General Labourer and 13 year old Cecil was working as a Garden Labourer. His parents remained in Heath Lane in 1911 but Cecil had moved to ????


He married Lucy Maria Arnold (sic) of 18 Ilchester Road, Weymouth, Dorset on 14 November 1914 at St Pauls Church, Weymouth, Dorset.


On enlistment, listed his occupation as gardener. Resident in Walworth, Surrey.

Wartime Service

Cecil enlisted at Bedford in September 1907, aged 19, and joined the Rifle Brigade for a period of 7 years with the colours and 5 years in reserve. 


He was promoted to Corporal in January 1914, Sergeant in August 1914 and Acting Company Sergeant Major in September 1914.


He was initially listed as missing and it was initially accepted that he was killed in action on or since 19 October 1916, however at the end of the war his body was found and reinterred at the A.I.F. Burial Ground in Flers, France. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £19 10s and pay owing of £14 10s 4d. She also received a pension of 18s 9d a week.
