George Archbold was born in 1896, in Clapton/Hackney, London/Middlesex, son of Alfred and Harriett Archbold, the eldest of two sons.


1901 Census records George aged 5, living with his parents at, 11, Bailey Lane, Hackney, London/Middlesex. His mother’s occupation is recorded as an Omnibus Driver.


1911 Census records George aged 15, working as an Apprentice Tin Etcher, living with his widower father and brother Thomas (9), at 13, Norton Road, Leyton, London/Essex.


It is not known when George and the family moved to Letchmore Heath, Herts. 

Wartime Service

George enlisted at Walthamstow, Essex, posted to the Essex Regiment with the service number 2568, later transferred to the Manchester Regiment with the new service number 377959.


George died on 15th September 1917, of wounds received in action, aged 21, he is buried in the Ramscappele Road, Military Cemetery in Belgium. Grave Ref; IX. C. 1.

Additional Information

His father Alfred received a dependents pension of 8/- a week, from 29th April 1918, the pension records show Alfred was living at, Usher Cottage, Back Lane, Letchmore Heath, Herts. He also received a War Gratuity of £16-10s-0d, and £11-13s-6d, George’s Pay Owing.
