Pre War

Herbert Henry Pearce (registered as Herbert Henry Wilson) was born in Berkhamsted, Herts in 1898, the son of William and Ada Pearce (nee Wilson) who married in Hemel Hempstead in 1901.


On the 1911 Census the family were living at 127 Emmanuel Road, Hastings, Sussex where his father was working as a skin dresser and Herbert was a 13 year old scholar. He had four younger sisters. 


His mother's address on pension records was given as 21 Beeston Street, Portsmouth, Hants.  She died in 1920. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Portsmouth and joined the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. 


He died of wounds from gas and is buried in Lijssenhoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 3s 6d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
