Pre War

Alfred John DILLEY was born in Wormley, Hertfordshire, on 8th March 1890, the son of Edward William Dilley a Labourer and Maria Dilley (nee Adams). One of eight children.


1891 Census records Alfred aged 1, living with his parents, brothers, Edward (12), Frederick (7), sisters Edith (10) and Elizabeth (3), at West End, Wormley, Herts, his grandmother Elizabeth Adams was living with the family.


Alfred was baptised on 31st July 1892, in the Parish of Wormley, Herts, with his brother Ernest Albert Dilley who was born in May 1892.


1901 Census records Alfred (as John) aged 11, living with his parents, sisters Edith (20), Elizabeth (13) Mildred (6), Winifred (1 month), and brother Ernest (8), in Carnels Green, Broxbourne, Herts. His father Edward’s occupation is recorded as a Horse keeper on a Farm.


No 1911 Census for Alfred was found, his parents and sister Winifred (10) are still loving at Carnels Green, Broxbourne. His mother Maria died in late 1916, aged 60, the death was registered in Ware, Herts.

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted at York, posted to the Dragoon Guards and issued with the service number GS/14371, later D/14974, on completion of his training Alfred landed in France on 18th October 1915, with then 4th Battalion, Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish).


He was reported missing presumed Killed in Action on 25th March 1918, aged 28, at the First Battle of Bapaume (Battles of Bapaume 24th to 25th March 1918). He is buried in Serre Road Cemetery No 2. Hebuterne, Somme, France. Grave Ref: XII. F. 7.

Additional Information

His father Albert received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 6th November 1918, and his effects of £22-07-05, pay owing and his war gratuity of £20-10-00.
