James Albert was born in St Albans on 23 Feb 1896, the only son of James Albert Ansell and Miriam Elizabeth (nee Tillcock).On the 1911 Census the Family were living in Sacombe, Ware. James had 3 younger sisters.
Wartime Service
James enlisted in Hertfordshire Regiment as private 5188 at Hertford (his serial number probably dates to Jun 1915). He later transferred to 1 /6 Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 6/6722 and was then re-numbered as 266644.
The Northumberland Fusiliers had been involved on the Battle of Le Transloy (1 – 18 Oct 1916) and James was reported killed in action on or after 6 Nov 1916. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, Somme.
