Pre War
Wilfred George Andrews was born on 7 June 1896 in Highclere, Hampshire, the son of John and Emeline Andrews and one of three children. He had two sisters, Emeline and Elsie.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Harbury, Warwickshire where his father was working as a carpenter. By the 1911 census they were living at Shenley, Barnet, Herts and both 14 year old Wilfred and his father were working on a dairy farm. At the time of enlistment papers his home address was given as Green Street, Shenley with his occupation shown as retail milk on a dairy farm. N.B. Green Street links Boreham Wood with Shenley.
Parents later lived at Cliff Cottage, Sturminster Marshall, Wimborne, Dorset and 48 High Street, Spetisbury, nr Blandford, Dorset.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 5 July 1916 in Cricklewood and joined the Gordon Highlanders. He left Folkestone, Kent on 1 August 1916, arriving at Boulogne the same day, and joined the 9th Battalion in the field on 11 September.
He was admitted to hospital at St Pol on 7 April 1917 suffering from German measles and released ten days later.
Wilfred was killed in action on 20 April 1917, aged 20, and is buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £5 7s 9d. Pension cards exist in respect of his mother as dependant but give no indication of the amount received.
N.B. It is believed that Wilfred is also listed on the Spetisbury War Memorial, Dorset, but his surname is incorrectly listed as Adams.
