Pre War

William Arthur Andrews was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in Abt. 1894, son of Lewis Arthur Andrews and Sophia Andrews (nee Morris). One of five children, Albert (B 1887), Florence (B 1889), Alice (B 1891) and Charles (B 1899.


1901 Census records William aged 6, living with his parents, and four siblings at, 300, Trinity Marsh Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census records William aged 17, employed as a Nursery Hand, living with his parents, and three siblings at, 44, Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


On the 30 December 1912, William travelled to Mill Hill, to enlist in the Royal Field Artillery (RFA), signing on for six years with the Colours and six years with the Reserves. He gave his age as 18 years and his occupation as a Farm Labourer.


He joined his Regiment at the Woolwich, London, Depot on 1 January 1913, with the service number 71335. Posted to 101st Battery, RFA on 4 March 1913, then to the 35th Battery, RFA on 22 November 1913. On 9 January 1914, he was posted to the 12th Battery, RFA.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war William was a serving soldier with the 12th Battery, RFA, he landed in France with them in October 1914, serving on the Western Front until November 1917, when the 12th Battery RFA, was moved to Italy.


William was taken ill and died of Influenza at 9th Casualty Clearing Station, Montagnana, Italy, on 27 November 1918. He is buried in the CWGC Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade, Italy.

Additional Information

His brother Private 23439 Charles Lewis Andrews of the Essex Regiment was also lost in the war. (Died 2 November 1917, in Gaza, Palestine. His effects of £11-00s-09d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £31, went to his father Lewis Andrews.
