Pre War

Born in Maidstone, Kent, John Edward Andrews was the eldest son of John and Mary Andrews. He was one of 6 children. The family moved to Bushey and settled at 15 High Street in the mid-1880s.


By 1911 John Andrews senior was 70 and his three daughters had left home, but his three sons were still living with him.  They, like their father, were all employed as bricklayers.

Wartime Service

John Edward Andrews enlisted as Private 27818 with the Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed on 25 September 1916.  He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial to the Missing (Pier and Face 2C) and on the Bushey memorial, on the plaques at St James, St Peters and at the Congregational Church.


Pension records show his parents were awarded 6/- per week from 03/07/17. 


His younger brother, Walter Ernest Andrews, was also killed in action two months earlier on 27 July 1916. He is also commemorated at Thiepval.
