Aubrey Julian was born in1896 in Wheathampstead to Julian Pearce, a grocer, and Sarah Elizabeth (nee Wilsher).


On the 1901 the family of parents, elder sister Violet Mabel (born 1890) and Aubrey were living at East Street, Wheathampstead.  On the 1901 Census the family were living at Station Road, Wheathampstead. Violet was an assistant teacher, Aubrey was still at school aged 15 and they had a younger brother Denis Guy (born 1906).

Wartime Service

Aubrey enlisted as Private G/19182 in Buffs (East Kent) Regiment, his G/ prefix indicates duration of ware service. No Service Record was found for Aubrey.


He may have been called forward in 1916 and probably arrived to join 7th (Service) Battalion of the Buffs on the Somme. 7th Buffs were a unit of 18 (Eastern) Division and took part in many of the Battles of the Somme and also the Operations on the Ancre (11 Jan to 13 Mar 1917) including the Battle of Miraumont (17-18 Feb 1917). Aubrey was killed in action on 26 Feb 1917.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £6 3s 1d was paid to his father, who received £176 18s 7d from Probate.
