Frederick Andrews was born in Flamstead in 1892 (baptised 7 Aug 1892) to William Andrews, farm labourer, and Annie (nee Shephard.


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William (a farm labourer born 1875), Ellen (born 1880), George (born 1882), Herbert (born 1884), Charles (born 1886), Arthur (born 1888) and Minnie (born 1890) were living at Twenty Acres, London Road, Flamstead.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, George & Herbert (both Hay & Straw Carters), Charles, a farm boy, Arthur, Frederick (, Horace (born 1897) and Percy (born 1899) were living at cottages London Road, Flamstead.


On the 1911 Census Frederick, farm labourer together with his parents, Horace (farm labourer) and Percy (schoolboy) were living at Twenty Acres, Flamstead.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted as Private 15856 in the Bedfordshire Regiment (probably in Sep/Oct 1914, but no Service Record  was found for Frederick.


He went to France with 7th (Service) Battalion in 54 Brigade, 18th (Eastern) Division on 26 Jul 1915. They took part in the Battles of the Somme 1916 - Albert (! Jul – 13 Jul), Bazentin (14-17 Jul) and Thiepval Ridge 26-28 Sep 1916. The 7th were In reserve during the initial attack on Thiepval (26 Sep), moving forward during night and made successful assault on north-western corner of the village - C and D Companies advancing at about 5.45am (27 Sep). there was fierce hand-to-hand fighting at Schwaben Redoubt (28 Sep). It was during this period that Frederick was reported killed in action on 27 Sep 1916.


His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.


Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 10s and areears of £8 0s 5d was paid to his father William.

Brother Percy served with 7th (Service Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment as Private 42803 and was Died of wounds on 4 Jun 1918.

Brother Charles served with Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 17675 and as Private 22445 in Princess Victotia's (Royal Irish Fusiliers), demobilised Feb 1919 and died 15 Oct 1919.
