Pre War
Charles was born in West Hyde on 24th July 1893 and was baptised there on 24th of September. His parents were Thomas and Eleanor Mary Andrews his father being a Labourer on the Watercress Beds. Thomas and Eleanor had a large family – eight children on the 1901 census when they were living in Church Lane, Mill End.
By 1911 Charles was already in the army recorded as a Musician living Stanhope Lines, Aldershot.
Recorded as enlisting in Watford.
Wartime Service
The 1st Beds were in action at the second battle of the Scarpe fought in torrential rain and snow between the 22nd and 24th of April 1917. Their objective was to attack and capture part of the German trenches from the Vimy-Avion railway to Souchez. They encountered exceptionally strong enemy defences and the attack was unsuccessful.
Charles died of wounds in Boulogne.
