Pre War

Son of George and Caroline Payne of Sandridge.


In 1891 the family were living in the High Street, Streatley, Beds. Present were both parents: George (30) and Caroline (25), with George working as an agricultural labourer and Caroline as a straw hat and bonnet sewer. Their children were: Alice (4), Lily (2) and William at just two months old.


We have yet to find the family in 1901, but by 1911 they were living at Upper Beech Hyde, Sandridge Nr St Albans. Present were both parents, George now  working as a shepherd. The census recorded they had been married for 25 years with 9 children, of whom 2 had died. The children present were William, now 20 and also a shepherd, Harry, 16 and a farm labourer, Mary (14), George (12) and Joseph (10).

Wartime Service

Enlisted in St Albans and attested in and was initially Private 17998, Bedfordshire Regiment, He later transferred to 1st Battalion Border Regiment as Private 21015.


William enlisted in St Albans and attested in Bedford on 16 Nov 1914 as Private 17998 Bedfordshire Regiment and was posted to 3rd (Reserve) Battalion on 29 Nov 1914. Following his training he went to France on 8 Jun 1915 to join 2nd Battalion, a unit of 7 Division, in the field. William was wounded (Gunshot wound Right shoulder) during the Battle of Loos and was returned to UK on 29 Sep 15.


Killed in action on 16 Aug 1917,

Back pay and gratuities of £26 5s 11d paid to mother. His brother Harry Payne also served and died.
