Son of Thomas and Minnie Evelyn (nee PRITCHARD) PAYNE of Watford.
His parents married 31 July 1897 at St Andrew’s, Watford. Thomas died 5 July 1953 in Watford aged 83, and was buried 9 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Minnie died 21 July 1954 in Watford aged 82, and was buried 27 July, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Sidney was born 5 August 1899 in Watford, and baptised 3 September 1899 at St Paul’s, Chipperfield, Herts. He attended Victoria Junior School, Watford; then Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 6 September 1909 to 25 July 1913. He resided in Watford.
On the 1901 Census, aged 1 he lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings. On the 1911 Census, at school aged 11, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.
Additional Information
Unfortunately, Sidney’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
There is an article about and a Death announcement for Sidney in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 15 June 1918; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 31 May 1919.
Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War.
