Pre War

Son of George and Caroline Payne, of Sandridge and later Coleman Green, Wheathampstead, Herts.

In 1891, before Harry's birth, the family were living in the High Street, Streatley, Beds. Present were both parents: George (30) and Caroline (25), with George working as an agricultural labourer and Caroline as a straw hat and bonnet sewer. Their children were: Alice (4), Lily (2) and William at just two months old.

We have yet to find the family in 1901, but by 1911 they were living at Upper Beech Hyde, Sandridge Nr St Albans. Present were both parents, George now  working as a shepherd. The census recorded they had been married for 25 years with 9 children, of whom 2 had died. The children present were William, now 20 and also a shepherd, Harry, 16 and a farm labourer, Mary (14), George (12) and Joseph (10).
