Pre War

James was born in 1892, in Little Wymondley. He resided in Roe Green in Hatfield.

We believe that we have identified the correct man, however there is some doubt because the Hatfield War Memorial and the Memoriam Book both record this man as being in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and not the Rifle Brigade as with the man identified.  However, the Soldiers Died in The Great War tells us that S/3963 James Payne was born in Little Wymondley and lived in Hatfield (probably Roe Green) when he enlisted in Charing Cross, Middx.  So this adds weight to our identification.

We would always welcome additional information to help further.

If we have the right man, then is seems likely that he is listed as Jim in the 1901 census and in the following family living in Little Wymondley

Parents John (49) and Mary Payne (47) and children: John (23), Arthur C (21), Thomas J (11), Edward (15), Mary E (12), David (10), Jim (7) and Fanny (4). John (father), John, Arthur C, Thomas and Edward were all working as agricultural labourers.

Wartime Service

James enlisted in Charing Cross, London; he was posted to the Rifle Brigade with the service number S/3963. His medal card records he left for France on the 29th July 1915. James was Killed in Action on the 10th July 1916; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing in France.

1914/15 star, Victory Medal & British War Medal.
