Frederick Payne was born in 1878 in South Mimms to Peter Payne, a farm Labourer, and Matlilda (nee Holden).


On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Arthur (born 1876), John (born 1878, Frederick and William (born 1881) were living at high Road, South Mimms.


On the 1892 Census the Family of parents, Frederick, William and Ada (born 1886 were living at Southgate Road, South Mimms.


On the 1901 Census his parents and Thomas (born 1891 were living at Southgate Road, South Mimms.


On the 1911 Census his parents were ling at Copel Cottage, Southgate Road, South Mimms.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Fredrick. He is believed to have enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery prior to 1914, as Gunner 95557. He rose to the rank of Serjeant. Frederick went to France on 28 Aug 1915 and was posted to Guards Division Artillery Headquarters. The Guards Division was formed in France in Aug 1915 and a number of RFA Brigades were attached.


Frederick married Bridget Deigan in 1915 jn Kilkenny, Ireland.


Frederick was accidently killed on 10 Apr 1918 while on active service.


Additional Information

War Gratuity £20 and arrears of £22 14s 7d was paid to his widow Bridget, who also received a pension of 16s per week.Her address is given as 4 Lower John Street, Kilkenny, Ireland.
