Son of Margaret (nee BELL) and the late George Robert PAYNE; husband of Marion Kate (nee SMITH) PAYNE.
His parents married 1 July 1877 at St Philip’s, Clerkenwell, London. George died 1888 in the Holborn, London district aged 59, and was buried 21 July in St Pancras Cemetery, London; Margaret died 1923 in the Holborn district aged 82, and was buried 1 October in Islington Cemetery, London.
Charles was born 1878 in Clerkenwell, and baptised Easter Thursday 1884 at St Paul’s, Clerkenwell. He married 6 March 1898 at St Paul’s, Clerkenwell; they had five children. He resided in Watford. Marion never remarried and died 21 June 1966 in Watford aged 86.
On the 1881 Census, aged 3 he lived in Clerkenwell, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1891 Census, a carman’s mate aged 13, he still lived in Clerkenwell, with his widowed mother and four siblings. On the 1901 Census, of no occupation aged 22, he still lived in Clerkenwell, with his wife and two children. On the 1911 Census, a relief stamper aged 33, he lived in Watford, with his wife and five children.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Finsbury, London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 30 September 1915, and died of wounds received in action.
Additional Information
Unfortunately, Charles’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
