Pre War

Alfred was born in 1885 in Belmont, Bolton to John Pawson, farmer and cow keeper, and Ann (nee Coates).


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Higher End Farm, Sharples near Bolton. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Sandy Lane Bootle, John Pawson was now a cow keeper and dairyman and two of his sons Alfred and George were employed as milk cart drivers. By the 1911 the family were living at Cross Street Bootle and were running a dairy business.


Alfred married Alice Wood on 23 Jan 1916 in Bootle, Lancs and later lived at York Villa, Carlton Rd., Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted as Private 267553 in Kings (Liverpool) Regiment at Seaforth Barracks, the depot for the Regiment.


He went to France joining 2/7 Battalion. He was killed action on 6 Oct 1918 prior to the second Battle of Cambrai. The value of his War Gratuity would suggest service in excess of 3 years.

Additional Information

His widow, Mrs Alice Pawson, York Villa, Carlton Rd., Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "SADLY MISSED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN". War Gratuity of £14 10s paid to his widow.
