Albert Amtman was born in 1895 in Mile End, East Ham, London, the son and youngest child of Charles and Sarah Amtman and one of seven children. His mother died in early 1901 and on the 1901 Census he was living with his father and six siblings at 7 Norman Road, East Ham, Essex, where his father was working as a gardener.
He was educated at Merchant Taylor's School in Ashwell, Herts.
His father had been born in Germany and had been a naturalised British subject since 1979. He was living in Guilden Morden, nr Royston in 1911. His sister Harriett married Charles William Andrews in Ashwell and sister Kitty (Catherine) married William James Wall in Ashwell, later moving to London.
His father was living at 125, Keslake Rd., Kensal Rise, London at the time of Albert's death and later lived at The Lodge, Priest Hill, Old Windsor.
Wartime Service
Albert is believed to have enlisted in Lambeth, London in April 1914, and served with the 1st Battalion, Connaught Rangers in France from 10 January 1915.
He was killed in action on 26 April 1916, aged 21. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
On some records the surname of Amtman has been changed to Hampton.
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £5 17s 8d. He also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
