Charles Alley was born in 1891 to Frederick Tattam, a shepherd, and Mary Ann Rebecca (nee Alley),


On the 1901 Census parents, Charles with William (born 1890), Lucy Alley (born 1893), Harry (born 1895) and Fred (born 1897) were living at Sopwell Farm, St Stephens, St. Albans. Charles’ father died in 1901.


Charles enlisted in Royal Garrison Artillery at some time after 1901 as he is recorded on the 1911 Census as being in 99 Company stationed at Malta.


His widowed mother married Thomas Allen, a watercress cutter, in 1905 and on the 1911 Census was living with Thomas, Harry and Fred Tattam at Park Street, St Albans.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Charles. As Charles may have been already serving or on Reserve he may have been serving at the outbreak of the Great War in Aug 1914.


He was posted to 29 Siege Battery, RGA which was formed in Aug 1915 and Charles to France on 30 Aug 1915. He is reported as dying on 18 Nov 1918 probably as result of Illness.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs M A Allen, Hawfield, Park St., St. Albans, ordered his headstone inscription: "PEACE PERFECT PEACE".
