Born 10th October 1881. Robert was the son of John and Sarah Patey of St. Joseph's Villa, 17 Glebe Street, Walsall his father being a soldier. He was a married man with two children resident with his parents.
In the 1911 census Robert Patey is living at Carisbrooke, Hampshire (Isle of Wight). He is a Colour Sergeant aged 31 born Tralee, Kerry.

Wartime Service
Robert enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment as a boy and served with them throughout the Boer War. At the outbreak of the First World War Robert was a regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in the same regiment. On Wednesday 4th November 1914 he received his commission, being gazetted to the King's (Liverpool) Regiment. Initially he was engaged in training, but on being promoted to Lieutenant in September 1916 he was drafted to France.
In November 1916 Robert was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Military Cross. The citation for the Military Cross from the London Gazette reads: "Lt Robert Thomas Patey Liverpool Regiment For Conspicuous Gallantry In Action. He led his company with great courage and skill. He organised a bombing attack which captured a trench and seventy two prisoners. Later he captured a further sixteen prisoners and carried out the consolidation of the position with great skill."
He was an Acting Captain at the time of his death.
