Cyril Almond was born in 1897, in Chiltern Green, Beds, son of Henry Almond (a Farm Stockman) and Annie Almond (nee Smith).
The 1901 Census records Cyril aged 3, living with his parents, and brother Percy (12) in, Chiltern Green Hyde, Beds and in the 1911 Census records Cyril aged 13, at school, living with his parents, and elder brother Percy in, Chiltern Green, Hyde, Beds. He is recorded as living there when he enlisted in Bedford.
Wartime Service
Cyril enlisted at Bedford on 29 October 1915, aged 18, signing on for 4 years, with the 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, Territorial Force, with the service number 5516. It is not known when he was transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment, his service record shows he was in training and serving at home from 1 November 1915 to 9 December 1916, when he embarked at Folkstone with the Leicestershire Regiment (with the new service number 33161), arriving in France the following day.
His service record also shows he had been trained as a bomber. He was killed in action on Thursday 3 May 1917, possible at the Battle of Bullecourt (11 April to 3 May 1917) he has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the fallen in France.
Additional Information
His mother Annie received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 6 November 1918. His effects of £4-5s-9d, Pay Owing and £6-10s-00, War Gratuity went to his father Henry.
