Pre War

Walter Ernest Allport was born in 1894, the elder child of Charles Ambrose and Emma Mary Allport, and baptised on 11 February 1894 at St John's, Blackheath. At the time, the family were living at 11 Fern Villas, Charlton Road, Blackheath and his father was a Clerk. They remained there on the 1901 Census, by which time Walter had been joined by four  siblings.


The family had moved to Kempston, Beds by 1911 but Walter was not living with them. His parents later lived at 7 Watling Street, Radlett, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Shaftesbury Street, Hoxton, London, the HQ of the 4th Btn, City of London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) and first served in Egypt from 24 August 1915. 


He was killed in action on 1 July 1916. during the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £2 14s 2d. He was also awarded a pension of 18 shillings for life.
