Arnold Newland Allison was born in Waltham Cross/Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, (depending on the document) on 29 June 1885, son of Charles Hunt Allison, a Foreman at the Royal Gunpowder Factory (RGPF) and Julia Allison (nee Newland). He was baptised at the Church of Holy Cross and St Lawrence, Waltham Abbey, Essex, on 3 June 1888, aged 2, with his sister Lillian Helen Charlotte Allison (B 24 January 1888).
His mother Julia Allison died on 14 May 1890, in Hertford, aged 39.
1891 Census records Arnold aged 5, living with his widower father, sister’s Frances (7), Helen (Lillian) (3) and brother Bertram (7), in Waltham Lane, Cheshunt, Herts. The family had a live in Housekeeper Eliza Newland (possible his aunt) and a Domestic Servant Emma Challis.
His father Charles married his second wife Rebecca Eve at St Phillips Church, Kensington, London, on 11 February 1899.
1901 Census records Arnold aged 15, employed as a Butcher’s Apprentice, living with his father, stepmother, sisters Frances (17) and Lillian (13) at “Berwick House” Eleanor Cross Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
His father Charles Hunter Allison died on 28 July 1910, aged 63.
1911 Census records Arnold, living in, The Chase, Thundersley, Essex. His Occupation is given as a Small Land Holder.
Wartime Service
Arnold enlisted at Epping Forest, Essex. Initially posted to the Royal Army Service Corps with the service number 146490. Transferred to the Price of Wales Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment with the service number 32326. He served on the Western Front.
He died on 6 September 1917, of wounds received in action. He is buried in the CWGC Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Additional Information
His effects of £9-12s-10d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £8-10s-00d, went to his Executer John Eve, a Chartered Secretary. His Headstone inscription “THE PATH OF DUTY WAS THE WAY TO GLORY” was requested by his elder brother Bertram Charles Allison.
