Pre War

Born in 1898 in 10 Brewhouse Lane, Hertford son of George and Emily Pateman and was baptised on 18 Sep 1898 in St Andrew’s, Hertford. He was living in 83 St Andrew’s Street, Hertford in 1911 working as a milk boy. He emigrated on the “Indrapura” to Melbourne, Australia on 17 Apr 1914.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in the Australian Infantry in Melbourne on 24 Feb 1916 and returned to Europe on the Troop Ship Megantic on 6 Aug 1916 initially to Alexandria and then entered France on 13 Dec 1916 from Folkestone on the SS Arundel to Etaples. He was killed in action on the Somme. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial.
