Horace Moss Allen was born in Aley Green, Caddington, Luton to Frederick Allen, straw hat blocker, and Emily (nee Moss).

On the 1891 Census the family of Parents, Lizzie (born 1884), Horace, and flora (born 1890 were living at Aley Green, Caddington.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Lizzie, Horace, Flornc, Born 1891), Charles (born 1892), Nellie (born 1895), Annie (born 1898), Eva & Ivy (born 1900) were living at Hicks Lane, Markyate.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Horace, Charles, Nellie, Annie, Eva and Ivy were living at 21 Hicks Lane, Markyate

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Horace.

He was enlisted as Private 23166 in the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was posted to 4th (Reserve) Battalion which had been converted for War Service and landed in France at Le Havre on 25 July 1916. The Battalion was placed in 190 Brigade of the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division and took part in the Battle of Ancre (13-16 Nov 1916) on the Somme Battlefield. They remained in this area to take part in the Operations on the Ancre (20 Jan- 3 Mar 1917) which consisted of small scale attacks to gain tactical advantages.

Horace was reported Killed in action on 14 Feb 1917. This may have been the result of the normal trench attrition of soldiers through Artillery action, trench raids, etc. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £4 10s and arrears of £5 12s 3d was paid to his mother.
